4.0 out of 5 stars My favourite guides, 24 Oct 2007
I'm not reviewing this item - I don't have it - but I do have 5 other Cadogan guides (Rome, Sicily, North East Italy, Tuscany, Umbria and the Marches and Italy), so am I the Cadogan traveller that the previous reviewer refers to?

I'm very fond of this series and it's my first choice to take on holiday (virtually all of my holidays are to Italy). I've never eaten poorly in a restaurant they've recommended (although my first choice for accommodation is Alastair Sawday).

The guides kick off with a few pages of excellent photos and a decent spot of history (readable in the queues to check in and get through security nowadays). Their main emphasis is then on the art and architecture and they take you to places you might otherwise easily miss. There are plenty of quirky comments and just enough personal opinion to be appealing without so much that it irriates. The road maps at the back are pretty decent, but then even the Touring Club Italiano maps can't cope with the curious junctions and lack of road signs in Italy.

I like the DK guides for immediate impact and quick reference, but they can't compete on the level of detail that Cadogan delivers.

1.0 out of 5 stars lazy and useless, 3 Sep 2007
What an awful series this is. Who is the ideal Cadogan traveller? The level of detail is thin and the accuracy exceptionally sloppy. More interested in the restaurants than anything else. Don't bother with this book - it is a waste of luggage space.
