5.0 out of 5 stars gorgeous, 17 Jun 2003
By a reader (London, UK) - See all my reviews
[...]As a long-time enthusiast of the Maltese islands, I would never be without this book. It's simply wonderful - exactly what a travel guide should be: wildly enthusiastic, informed, gossipy, and beautifully articulately written. Gaul obviously knows Malta and Gozo with an insider's love, and communicates this in spades. And best of all, unlike every other guide book I've come across, he gives the south and east sides of Malta - the most beautiful, most interesting and least touristy parts - the attention they deserve, rather than [...] of the attractions of the sand beach at St Paul's Bay, the chip shops of Qawra and the suburban charms of Sliema. And yes, it could do with an update - [...] - but his food recommendations largely still hold water, and he has pointed me to swimming places, views, historical marvels, festas and "secret" places that I would never have found without his help, and is usually able to tell one exactly what something is that one has passed at random. This is a splendid, splendid book [...]

3.0 out of 5 stars Handy for the first time visitor but out of date., 13 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This book is a useful guide to the tourist attractions of the Maltese Islands. Scattered throughout the book are short and easy-to-read historical stories, mythical legends and anecdotes. Unfortunately, it cannot be relied upon for its restaurant recommendations since many no longer exist. There is little information for the business traveller.

2.0 out of 5 stars Two stars, but great for gay British travelers, 6 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I was looking for an introductory guide to Malta for an upcoming business trip. This was not it. Geared for British and Australian travelers with special information for gays and kids, it tends toward such colloquialisms as "Ftira, another scrummy local bread, is harder to find; it looks like a huge sun-tanned Polo mint." Information on computer access, international dialing, and other essentials for business travelers is missing or inaccurate. Most of the guide is devoted to the history of Malta, helpful if you are trying to get up to speed quickly on the subject.
