5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent text, 10 Feb 2001
By A Customer
When I arrived at university to do a biology based degree I was rather surprised at the amount of biochemistry that was involved. I chose this particular book on recommendation and have not been disappointed. Having done no chemistry since GCSE, a clear layout is important to me to ensure my understanding of the modules I am currently studying. The arrangement of this book is uncomplicated; it is divided into sections that are titled according to a major area of study, such as Protein Synthesis, or Enzymes. These sections are then subdivided into smaller, more manageable divisions that tackle each stage of the larger topic step-by-step. The book gives keyword lists in a detailed-glossary style at the start of each section. This plainly shows the key words and concepts that are needed to understand that particular chapter. The chapters are also aided by frequent diagrams, which although are not colourful, (which is the only negative point that I have found about the book), are simple and illustrate the concept in a manner that is very easy to interpret. If the reader finds that they need to relate this chapter to a different topic in their work, then a list of related topics can be found at the end of the key word list. This gives 'related links' that can be used from within the textbook - a very useful feature, especially when writing up projects and lab report introductions! Instant notes in Biochemistry uses a series of abbreviations throughout the book within both text and diagram labelling. These are mainly standard abbreviations; for example, ATP for adenosine 5'-triphosphate - but all can be found in an alphabetically placed list after the content pages. At the back of the book is given a Further Reading section. This starts with a general reading list for those who just want to find a more general overview of chemistry within other books, and leads on to a much larger section that details books that deal with a specific section of biochemistry. The layout of this is excellent as instead of just searching through a mass of book recommendations, it is set out so that those books applicable to section A are all placed together, those to Section B are all together and this goes on throughout the sections, making it much faster to find relevant material. In conclusion, this is an excellent biochemistry book that is perfect for biologists with little background in the subject of biochemistry. The fact that it is actually one of the cheaper chemistry textbooks is a further bonus for students (!) but makes no difference to the quality of information offered - I would definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best biochem book........ever!, 13 Jan 2004
By A Customer
I really struggled to get to grips with many of the huge biochemistry text books around, finding them difficult to read because of the huge amounts of waffle in them. Not so for this book, straight to the point so you can grasp the basics, and then, if you need to know more, you can go on to other books knowing what you are looking for. If you only buy one book - buy this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential for medicine., 8 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Not the best biochemistry book I've ever read but most medical schoool biochemistry lectures refer to this directly so it is essential to have a copy. For a more in depth Biochemistry textbook I would reccomend Principles of Biochemistry by Leinghner but as a quick set of notes (which is what it was written for) it is pretty good.
