Product Description

Product Description

Bradford is in the throes of major changes. The city centre is being completely redesigned to create a bright new retail and leisure heart and the key area around Broadway is being flattened to make way for it. More and more people are choosing to make the heart of Bradford their home, and long-disused mill buildings are being revitalised to create modern, hi-tech apartments. As the old buildings are demolished or refurbished, we can reflect on the recent history of central Bradford and commemorate the city's heritage. Bye Bye Broadway is a unique pictorial history of the evolution of Bradford city centre from industrial powerhouse to a 21st century place in which to work, live and be entertained. Delving into the files of Bradford's famous newspaper, the Telegraph & Argus, this volume brings together some rarely-seen photographs of how Bradford looked in the past and the people that populated it. As the cityscape undergoes dramatic regeneration, it is important to record for posterity the way we were. Change is inevitable and the plans for Bradford are exciting and filled with possibilities. In Bye Bye Broadway, we embrace the future while saluting the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pictorial book on my home town, 20 Aug 2008
EE-bye-eck, you can't beat a trip down memory lane in Bradford. With the help of the local Telegraph & Argus newspaper it cover's an era from Victorian through the decades to current era.

I often flick through this book with a fond tear in my eye. Today though it's all been bulldozed down to make way for the 21st century Bradford......a few year's down the line and that pile of rubble that was once Broadway is still there.
What Bradford can be proud of is it's many, many, many....Fast Food Take Away's which sadly is not included in this book.
We have many even side by side selling two pieces of chicken with fries for 99p.
Only in Bradford.
We are also lucky not to have to pay for japatties with our £2 curries.
Only in Bradford.
It's a great shame that this part of Bradford's once fine, but now decaying outlook is not in this book.

A must have book for Bradfordian's like myself. Plus not forgetting the rest of God's county.
Also, a fine book to 'educate' Lancastrian's on the wrong side of the Pennine's.
