Product Description

Synopsis
FIRST published by Breedon Books in 1992, Inns and Taverns - The Illustrated History of Derby's Pubs records and, in many cases, describes every inn known to have traded in the city since the 18th century, and includes many from even earlier eras. Derby was renowned for its ale long before Burton upon Trent seized its accolade, and the Introduction seeks to record Derby's brewing and malting history, to place inns and taverns in their social context and to record the families, breweries and changes which have taken place. There is also a section on pub names, often a lively topic of debate. This revised edition also incorporates much newly researched information made available to the author some by the late Ivor Clissold, courtesy of his widow, as well as other members of Derby CAMRA. An attempt has also been made to incorporate additional anecdotal material. The book combines longforgotten inns, much-cherished hostelries, hotels and more recently demolished pubs with all those still in existence, many of which have a long and colourful history.

This book is profusely illustrated, with many new photographs, and will both delight and fascinate anyone interested in the history of the city, or even merely that of their 'local'. The original edition rapidly sold out on publication,
