Product Description

Product Description
FOR this second edition of their acclaimed history of Leeds, Steven Burt and Kevin Grady have extensively revised their account of the 20th-century development of the city, in particular the dramatic changes that took place in the post-war years. The book provides a readable, authoritative account of the history of the city that will appeal to residents and visitors alike and will serve as an invaluable source of reference. Much new research has been included. The authors describe the growth of Leeds from a medieval village to the prosperous and dynamic modern city. They explain how it became an immensely successful cloth marketing town in the 17th and 18th centuries, then went on to become one of the greatest and most diverse of England's Victorian cities. They complete the story with a description of the rapid social and cultural changes that created the prosperous commercial capital that is Leeds today. The book is profusely illustrated with maps and plans and includes many previously unpublished photographs.

About the Author
STEVEN BURT is a historical advisor to Leeds Civil Trust and a well-known lecturer and author on Leeds history. KEVIN GRADY is Director of the Leeds Civil Trust and a well-known local author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, interesting & informative, 28 Dec 2002

It's easy to be dismissive of local history books as there are quite a few that have a "cobbled-together" feel with little detail or analysis.

This book doesn't fall into that trap.

There's a good mix of research - for example, not only do the authors discuss what working conditions were like in Industrial Revolution Leeds, but also the diet and social life of its workers. The overall scope and apporach of the book means that you don't just end up with the history of Leeds as isolated information, but within the framework of the history of the British Isles.
