5.0 out of 5 stars A truly beautiful and personal insight into WW1, 15 Jun 2001
"When Heroes Die" is a book written by Sue Smart about the 101 school boys as well as one school teacher from the public school, Gresham's, who went to fight in the First World War. Sue Smart teaches history and classical civilisation at Gresham's, which is a school in Holt, near the coast of North Norfolk. The book unravels the story of all the brave boys who went to fight in the war as well as the effect it had on the school master, Howson, at the time. It is beautifully presented and the facts are presented in a sensitive and thought provoking way. It cannot be described as 'just another history book' as Sue Smart has written the book in such a personal way and over the period of two years that she wrote it, came to know the old greshamians very well in a surreal way. The book also shows history of the school, such as the building of the chapel in the early 1900s, a truly momentous building, still used by the growing school today. Much effort has been placed into this book and many original letters sent by the boys, school photos, as well as the notices sent to the parents are included. It shows World War One in a different perspective to other books before it and it is a fantatsic read. It was also gained a worthy 5 page article in the Saturday Times magazine last November and the final result was worth the long awaited anticipation.
