Product Description

Product Description

Covering 22 treks, ten climbing peaks and 8 snow-shoe walks, this guide is a tool for both the experienced climber and the first-time trekker visiting "Europe's playground". Region by region, the book offers clear, authoritative descriptions of treks - some classics, some the author's personal favourites - and of aspirational climbing peaks and snow walks. The guide also contains practical information on travel, techniques and equipment to help visitors have as safe and healthy a tour as possible. Cartography and strip maps pinpoint every route and give a reliable idea of distance and timings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly informative and motivating!, 10 April 2002
I'm a keen walker who has never ventured beyond the shores of the UK. Call it cowardice, xenophobia, fear of the unknown.. I've picked up whole books dedicated to single Alpine walks and treks - Kev Reynolds' Chamonix to Zermatt or even Edward Whymper's Scrambles Amongst the Alps - but these were heroics achieved by alien beings in places I would never venture. Until I read this new book.

Here are wonderful clear colour photographs showing real people tackling paths that certainly look no tougher than those I know in Snowdonia. Not the sad black-and-white illustrations of the pocket books. Here is a wide range of different treks and walks, well-mapped, distilled to give me a feel for the achievable and the foolhardy (from my perspective). Not a book to slip into your Gore-Tex jacket because of its large format, but one to mull over in the quiet planning times when you know a new adventure and the joy of the mountains is in the offing.

Thanks Hilary Sharp. I'm off to the Alps at last. And I hope to see you there. I know that like me and all I know who love and treasure mountains, you'll have a silly grin on your face!

5.0 out of 5 stars An informative and readable book for all who enjoy walking., 16 April 2002
By A Customer
This book is not for the rucksack,it will be more at home on the bedside table where a read at bedtime will forge dreams of treks, tours and peaks to plan and achieve or maybe past glories to remember.
If you are a fit hill walker and have always thought that the Alps were for the elite climbers then this book will change your mind.
It entices you straight away with a very informative introduction about the areas that you are going to be walking and climbing in .The section is concise but contains all that the traveller wants to know as do the following chapters,2 & 3 which deal with Arriving in the Alps and then what is required for the various types of treks or tours.
The sections on the walks are what tempt the reader to the book whether you are a possible first timer or one who has been a few times before. If you have done some of the treks and got the T-shirt then there are lots more to do.If you have done all 22 then I am jealous but you could still buy a copy to reminisce in your later years.
The photographs are excellent, showing the high mountain peaks and also as on page 92 a group at 9000 feet in their shorts. The pen pictures of the flowers are an extra which is worthwhile to the trekker when he/she returns and wonders what it was they were looking at.
It is an excellent purchase for your bookshelf and for me it brings back many happy memories of treks done and peaks achieved. There could have been more and Trek 22 would have been very enjoyable but that will have to remain a dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent publication, 1 April 2002
By A Customer
I have been a keen trekker and climber over many years and during this time I have read many books on the subject. Non,however, come up to the standard of this book for general interest and information. The author has a style and depth of knowlegde which satisfies the requirements of first-time trekkers as well as expereinced mountaineers. She tells it 'as it is' eg the section on 'Health and Hygiene' and also gives informed opinion on fauna nad flora which can add considerably to the enjoyment of the Alps. The cartography and maps are clear and easy to understand and make route planning simple and positive.
I have completed a number of the treks decribed in the book and only wish the publication had been available when I was planning them. I have no hesitation in recomending this book to my younger friends who are starting their'Alpine Adventures' and look forward to similar books by the same author on other regions in the Alps.
