4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully presented, but somewhat short of ultimate, 2 Dec 2006
By Pickwick (Scottish Borders) - See all my reviews
If this book had been called "Encyclopedia of Knots" I'd have agreed - it's one of the best-illustrated books on the subject I've seen yet. The coverage is first rate, with some knots I hadn't seen before, and very clear explanations of how each is tied.

But knots is what this book is about - ropework as a wider subject is pretty thin on the ground. Some turksheads, rope mats, decorative hitches and simple braids, but not a sennit in sight and not a single splice in the book. So I'd say the words "ultimate" and "ropework" are pushing it a bit.

That all said, if it's knots you're after, I doubt you'll find a better or more beautifully illustrated book. A very good buy (and an unbeatable present for anyone keen on the subject) as long as you don't expect too much from the second part of the title.
