5.0 out of 5 stars Balti Cookbook - Excellent Fast Food Curry, 1 Dec 2008
By John Harris "J C Harris" (Leicester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been making and researching home style curries for nearly 6 years now. As you can imagine, I have bought many a cooking book on the subject of Indian cuisine.

Even though this book, a few years old now, seemed cheap and cheerful, I was delightfully surprised that it holds some of the best mouthwatering recipes I've ever come across. The key here is that everything is simple. Simple, quick and tasty.

The introduction to the book itself summarises Balti cooking in short and sweet detail and covers basic ingredients, spices and advice. And it's main appeal, I think, from having a busy life, is the simple step-by-step guide from start to finish - all pictures included. And I'm usually the one to snub 'cooking for idiots' guides, but in this case I found it enjoyable and effective. That told me then!

Note for vegetarians - Pakistan introduced Balti cooking to the West, and mainly as a meat eating nation their vegetable selection is mainly targeted as a side dish. This book seems to struggle with the 'main course' vegetarian ideal. But there is a section dedicated to Vegetarian dishes and covers them well, but not well enough. For example, one recipe in the vegetarian recipe included Minced Lamb as the stuffing for peppers! Tasty if you're a lamb fan, not so appealing if you're a vegetarian!

To sum up. Well, after seeing the prices you can get this for - don't hesitate. If you're keen to explore Indian Cuisine, and want to cook great curries in a hurry, you can't go wrong here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple but effective, 12 Feb 2004
By Tony Adolph (Munich (ex pat)) - See all my reviews
Most recipes takes only 6 - 7 steps. 100% success so far and I've had the book for over a year.

Whats nice is that the pictures (which are large and plentify) actually look like the finished meal!
