Could do better!, 6 May 2004
By A Customer
A 'must-have' for die-hard MX-5 enthusiasts if only for some of the interesting photos and the 'fun' of trying to identify all the inaccuracies within the book.Although the book boasts information on 'buying, enjoying, maintaining, modifying' MX-5 and its international variants, it should not be confused with a Haynes Workshop Manual as it will not tell you how to rebuild a gearbox nor even replace the spark plugs. The information, which is quite basic, is sometimes also inaccurate or incomplete, and while apparently aimed at the MX-5 novice it could just as easily mislead or misinform that group. The apparently arbitrary rating of Limited and Special Editions in Chapter 7 is likely to infuriate rather than inform. Comments, sometimes conflicting, have been accumulated and presented as facts. There are other books that will provide the enthusiast with a better source of reference on the cars, namely "Mazda MX-5, The full story of the World's favourite sportscar" by Brian Long, and "Mazda MX-5 and Miata 1989 - 1999" by James Taylor. For maintenance consider "Mazda MX-5 Enthusiast's Workshop Manual" by Veloce Publishing and for tuning & performance "Mazda Miata Performance Handbook" by Norman Garrett III. I would recommend purchasing this book after the ones listed above. By then you will be able to tell 'fact' from 'Haynes'.
