4.0 out of 5 stars Motor racing wisdom as she is spoke, 17 Jan 2000
By A Customer
While this book seems to be mostly a rehash of Mr. Roebuck's columns in several magazines (and in that sense it is a bit of a disappointment), no true enthusiast will want to do without it. Nigel Roebuck is obviously among the better informed reporters of motor racing, and one of the best writers. Besides, my childhood idol, Chris Amon, is a friend of his, so, as they say, he clearly has his head screwed on right! Rehash or no rehash, I read it in one go and was sorry there wasn't more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 27 Jan 2000
Anyone who is a fan of the Fifth Column will love this book. Much like his column, Roebuck combines his own opinions with a historic perspective and a great passion for the sport and it's personalities. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on N. Mansel...

4.0 out of 5 stars A well crafted book full of interest covering 50 years of F1, 19 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Nigel Roebuck ranks alongside Jabby Crombac and Denis Jenkinson as the most knowledgable and well thought of motorsport journalists. Roebucks penmanship is second to none bringing alive the highlights and indeed low periods of 50 years of top class motor racing. This same consumate skill covers the inevitable loss of life during the 60`s and 70`s with a resigned sympathy that only a true enthusiast could feel. At the same time Roebuck pulls no punches when controversy inevitably raises its head, no fence sitting here, blame is laid fairly and squarely at the feet of the antagonist, no one is spared not Senna or Mansell, Schumacher or Ecclestone. Two chapters that stand out above the others concern two individual and quite different characters, Rob Walker and Denis (Jenks) Jenkinson. Although neither reached the dizzy heights of popularity that the drivers did, without their presence Formula 1 Racing would not be the same. A cracking good read for anyone remotely interested in motor racing. Highly recommended.
