4.0 out of 5 stars How to teach an idiot..., 20 May 2008
By Simon Temple (London) - See all my reviews

I bought this book as I have a mental block when it comes to motorbike electrics. I have had a few bikes now with faulty wiring and wanted to over come this once and for all.

The book is typical Haynes manual which is a good place to start from. If you are used to their style of writing and layout then you will be comfortable with this straight away. It covers all aspects of electrics and include classic equipment to give a simple grounding in principles and then works its way forward to more complex ideas.

Most of the descriptions are theoretical and until I start work on my bike I cannot judge how this will translate into real world application. I imagine it will be fairly successful as I have used Haynes before.

The only thing that I would like to see in later editions is colour and maybe a breakdown on how to read a full modern wiring diagram, maybe showing how all the separate circuits are linked together. That said I would still recommend to a friend.

Simon

4.0 out of 5 stars depends what you want..., 16 Jan 2009
By Patrick Walsh (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews

There's a huge amount of great information in this book. Whether you're on an old magdyno'd BSA, or a modern electronic ignition Jap bike.

On the other hand, if you want a book that will hold your hand while you learn the basics of Volts, Amps, and Resistance, AND show you how to use a multimeter in conjunction with a drawing... this ain't it. For that, try Tracy Martin's book. (Though it has it's faults too).

Negative points about this Haynes book are - terrible quality of paper. The lovely colour photographs and illustrations on the cover don't materialise inside. Annoying.

A book for those curious and willing to make an effort to understand your bike's systems.
