4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent winter reading!, 24 May 2001
By A Customer
The evenings have drawn in, the logs are on the fire, and memories of summer warm the heart. Pimms on the lawn, the smell of freshly cut grass, and in the background the sound of well maintained Suffolk engine running on a forty-year-old cylinder mower. With the help of this book, maintenance of your petrol -engined mower should be a breeze.

Why not spend your winter evenings in the shed, away from the TV, maintaining your powered garden equipment in tip-top condition. Preventative maintenance is what this book would describe it as.

You've sorted the high speed internet connection to the house and shared it out to every room, as well as the garage and shed. The observatory in the garden would be great - if it wasn't for the clouds - and number 3's new security light. You need something just as enthralling now. Yes, it's time to learn the arts and science of lawn mower maintenance.

The book concentrates on the more recent mowers - specifically engines brought out in the past 15 years or so. However, some of these "new"! engines are the same as very much older engines, or so similar that if you're technically minded enough to want to maintain your own mower, then the pictures etc. in this book will be relevant enough.

It's up to the usual high standard of a Haynes manual. Clear text and clear pictures As with all engine maintenance, practice is needed, and the usual safety considerations need to be taken into account. But with mowers, even more care needs to be taken. Mowers are pretty unique engines - with the petrol tank next to the engine, and the engine attached to a large, high-speed sharp blade, the options for self-mutilation and torching must be taken into account. So read the safety warnings and advice. And you should be fine.

A great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars My review of Haynes manual for lawnmowers, 17 Jun 2009
The manual is mainly concerned with the engine, If you want to strip and rebuild the engine then the manual is fine as many engines are covered. However if you just want to replace a cable, or perhaps the roller or the drive belt then the manual is far from helpful, in fact, none at all!
