Hands in the air, I'm a long-time fan of Volvos and any manual which refers to "the enviable reliability for which the marque is famous" gets off to a good start for me.

That said, I've had my 136,000 mile 940 for three years now and this book contains enough detail for me to maintain and repair the vehicle without additional reference. I would mark it down only because it avoids some jobs as being "too hard" - as far as I'm concerned the only things which go in the "too hard" basket are reconditioning automatic transmissions and working on air conditioning systems. On the other hand, the regular maintenance sections are excellent, and reading through the instructions once before commencing the jobs generaly ensures no surprises. I've used the manual to guide me in replacing the head gasket, the front brake discs and calipers, and the timing belt; I've also used it to help me repair electric windows and sunroof on a 740 (same kit) and the electric aerial on a 760 (also the same). And following the maintenance schedule means that the car has never broken down (well, it is a Volvo after all).

If only Haynes did their own wiring diagrams instead of using manufacturers' ones the book would probably get five stars from me. I'm an electrical engineering graduate and even I usually find the electrics hard to read in Haynes' manuals.
