4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for anyone researching family history in this little corner of Essex, 18 Jul 2006
I brought this book because I have an interest in the village of THAXTED in Essex, and because I am able to trace one particular family line all the way back to the mid 1500s when parish records began in England. Photography of course only goes back a little over a hundred years, and it is a bit unfortunate that so many pictures in this book are from the 1950s and 1960s. There are some from the earlier half of the century, back as far as about 1906, but not nearly enough in my opinion. A number of pages are given over to the neighbouring parish of Dunmow and the "Dunmow Flitch", an event which is currently held every four years, the last being in 2004, though the ones in this book are from the 2000 event. At least the author tries to explain this old quaint village custom in the introduction to the book, and Thaxted's most famous vicar, Conrad Noel, gets name-checked several times, and although a picture is included of a bust of the man, there are no actual pictures, which is also something of a surprise and a let-down. No matter how much I enjoyed looking at the pictures in this book, I can't help but feeling that there should have been more. Or maybe I am just being greedy!
