Product Description

Synopsis

Liverpool is indisputably one of the greatest cities on earth. From its warm, tough, always-beating heart come people renowned for their friendliness, wit, resilience and strength of character. Throughout its long and surprisingly varied history Liverpool has engendered fierce loyalty from its citizens, and captivated even the most casual of visitors. "Liverpool: A People's History" tells the full story of this unique place in a way which celebrates the individuals who have shaped it, often allowing witnesses from the past to speak for themselves. This book traces the growth of the city from a little fishing village on the banks of the Mersey all the way from its foundation in 1207 to the proud European Capital of Culture 800 years later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Liverpool A People's History, 9 Oct 2006
By Mr. Andrew N. Taylor (Worsley, Manchester) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the best city history I have read, and certainly better than any history of my home town of Manchester. I am not an avid reader, but this book was gripping from beginning to end, not least due to the supurb range of historical maps of Liverpool illistrated within. For anyone interested in Liverpool or old maps of Liverpool, then this is the book to get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liverpool A people's History, 6 Jun 2009

Not read it all yet, just arrived, but it looks fantastic. Full of useful information, pictures and old maps, many in colour. As a Mancunian, with Liverpudlian ancestors I'm sure it will keep me busy for hours! The book begins in the 13th century and works it's way through to 2008. Old street maps, with an index of the origins of some of the street names.

5.0 out of 5 stars It brings history alive!, 26 May 2009
By Mrs. P Adams "book bird" (Marown, Isle of Man United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This really is an excellent book. I grew up in Liverpool in the aftermath of the 2nd world war when it was in a sorry state.
Having left in the late 60`s there is so much of the city`s history I did not know. This book is filling in all the gaps, with really interesting text and some great maps. It brings history alive.
