A mid-air explosion; a plane plunges to disaster from the Scottish skies, the British and American Defence Secretaries among the victims. Out of the blue, Edinburgh's Deputy Chief Constable Bob Skinner finds himself leading the biggest investigation of his career. The means of destruction is apparent from the start, but the investigation quickly grows more puzzling - for once they have an embarrassment of suspects with motive and opportunity. Then sudden random violence wrenches Skinner himself out of the picture. While his colleagues struggle with the mass of clues, he lies on the brink of death, trapped with the horrors from his own hidden past. As Skinner's ordeal reaches its crescendo, the police pursue their suspects one by one, until at last they are brought to a dramatic, thrilling, but tragic conclusion. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.


About the Author

Quintin Jardine was a journalist before joining the Government Information Service where he spent nine years as an advisor to ministers and civil servants. In 1986 he became an independent public relations consultant. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

The book grips you from the very first page, with a heart wrenching decription of a plane crash. The story develops with emotion and feeling, and leads the reader through a detailed and intricate plot. The characters are well defined and very quickly the reader feels as though Skinner is someone you have known for a long time. An excellent read, and one of the best thrillers in ages.

When a plane explodes over Scotland, killing over 200 people, Edinburgh's ACC wants to know who is responsible. Personally, after the first twenty pages, I couldn't really care less. The book is written in the kind of wooden prose that went out of date with Dorothy L Sayers and Robert Skinner comes across as being one of the least interesting characters of crime fiction in recent years; a supposedly tough guy (though little evidence of this supposed toughness is shown) whose heart is melted by the plight of a little boy, the only survivor of the tragedy (Altogether now, awwwww!). Nor does the sub-Forsyth subplot concerning an arab double agent add anything to the novel. Edinburgh's toughest copy? Come one, DI Rebus could have him for breakfast any time.

Police crime fiction. One in the series of DCC Bob Skinner, set in and around the Edinburgh area. As with any serial best read in chronological order as the reader benefits from the development of the characters written about. This story is set with the backdrop of an air crash investigation but as usual with Jardine there are plots and sub plots, Skinner himself is out of action and his team struggle on with the investigation. A good read not too taxing for the reader to follow.
