1.0 out of 5 stars Lots of glitter and lots of pretension ., 6 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Very well presented book, but the closer one looks the less substantial is the whole thing: photos that are CAD images, insubstantial projects and lots of padding in the form of pretentious aspiration. Good for them, but I know that one of the 'young' architects in here is probably 60 by now! In any case, who said young architects have a monopoly strangle-hold on good ideas and design excellence. (OK, I admit to being a grey beard, but it's a serious point.) And other 'young' architects (means not yet 45) are left out because they were in the last edition (so much for merit). London architectural politics! Sorry, but it doesn't add up to very much once one is beneath the attractive cover. Having said that, it makes a good coffee table book with nice images and will give you a rough idea of what younger practices are up to.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Architects 2, 4 Jul 2005
By S. Theobold (South East England) - See all my reviews

This is a well put together book of one page sound bytes of emerging architectural practices. Now approaching 4 years old, some of the practices have indeed gone onto bright things with Adajye Associates the obvious one springing to mind. This is a great book if you want to delve into the architectural scene. Not a point of reference in itself, but gives you enough to go off and research the practices that take your fancy. If you are looking for a job, its an invaluable resource. I would recommend it as an extended, illustrated contact book, and very useful to student and job seeker especially.

4.0 out of 5 stars good overview of young british practices, 9 Feb 2002
By A Customer
essentially, is a catalogue of a selected young/up&coming architectural practises based in the uk. Each practise is featured mostly with a double page spread. The pages concentrate on photograhic images
of completed projects. Most of the architectural projects featured are broadly speaking contemporay modern in style, being a mixture of new build, extension to existing building & refurbishment. The practices featured are a mixture of reasonabley well published firms as well as the less well known.
There is also as short written synopsis on each practices detailing varying from project history, practise background & design philoshophy

In conclusion an excellent photographic overview of young british firms, the only major downside being the lack of in depth information on construction detailing & projects featured making it difficult to appraise the relative merits of each practise
