1.0 out of 5 stars A waste of money, 2 Sep 2002
By A Customer
This book does such a bad job that I don't see why the guy bothered publishing it at all. Chris Welch lacks a few basic features to make him a legitimate Bowie interpreter - a taste for glam being the most prominent.
Worse than that - he does not try to follow the progression of ideas in Bowie's music, and regards each song as if standing on its own. That becomes a real obstacle when he deals with the "story" albums - Ziggy Stardust & Diamond Dogs. He completely misses the big story, and the place each song has in them.
There are much better books on Bowie - save your money for one of them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uninformed and pointless, 5 Nov 2008
By D. M. Deeks "Ren B." (West London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you've read Nicholas Pegg's masterful Complete David Bowie, you already know more about Bowie and his music than this author. Furthermore, he doesn't seem to like Bowie's music very much. Being a diehard fan, I was often irritated by the cloth-eared pronouncements in this book and the wobbly facts, so easily checked in a dozen other sources.

If you love Bowie you'll hate this. If you're just starting to appreciate his work, read Nicholas Pegg, or Strange Fascination by David Buckley - or better still, just buy every album Bowie released between 1969-80 and 1995-2002 and really listen!
