Those familiar with the icons of the male nude in photography will be thrilled to note that there is FINALLY (!) a volume that digs a little deeper than the editorial coverage of local fashion magazines. It is wonderful to note that the obvious photographers of the male nude are left to other tomes of this type, and it is singularly inspiring to see a great image from Miami photographer David Vance grace the cover! From the powerful images of Horst to the bizarre encounters of Richard Kern, this work conveys everything about the male figure that is at once attractive and repulsive: to wit, to be moved by the photographs contained within is to experience the range of emotion possible when one has a willing subject and a competent photographer. Kudos to Carlton Books for taking on such a challenge, mixing the erotic with the emotional and romantic, the strong with the weak. It is especially notable that this title is not a rehash of the same-old same-old purveyors of the male form. Often overlooked for reasons that are unknown except to other editors, there are many fine gems contained within from male and female photographers, past, present, and, thankfully, future. Sharply edited, this title will be noted for its slick presentation, starting with the cover photograph, to the content and the range, usually absent in similar titles.
