Football for Girls is capitalising on the interest in women's football in the UK. Not quite yet has this country witnessed a 70,000 seater stadium packed with fans of the game, as recently occurred at the final of the Women's World Cup in the USA, but interest there is. Women such as the USA's Mia Hamm and Shannon Macmillian and England's Sue Smith and Marianne Spacey are now becoming recognised, and this book attempts to attract the football stars of the future into the game. In the foreword, Spacey recalls her first interest in the game and subsequent development to the ranks of Arsenal and England.
This book is designed for the beginner in women's football. With a bright and colourful layout and design, it clearly and concisely contains information you need to know to play football. There is an extensive amount of information about the game, easy-to-follow diagrams and photographic footage of the World Cup. The first of three main sections deals with the rules of the game. It includes information such as when a corner kick is awarded, what referees' assistants flag signals mean and the offside law. Section two outlines skills and techniques, as well as containing "Way-To-Play Tips" and advice for practising the shots, passes and tackles described. The final section contains tactics, such as the role of fullbacks and sweepers and advice on how to defend corners. If you want to learn or coach the basics of football, read this easy-to-use guide and eventually the Cruyff turn or Beckham free kicks will follow. --Alison Taylor
