This review is from: The Trials of Rumpole (Paperback)
The second collection of Rumpole stories, taken from the second series of the TV series. Six perfectly plotted pieces, describing Rumpole in his natural environment, defending a motley collection of clients in the Courts of Law, in London and further afield.

Each of the stories is a joy, with just the right mix of legal action and character development. Not that Horace Rumpole's chracter develops, really, as he is supremely set in his ways, but the supporting cast do advance in their various careers and in their private lives, observed with benign indulgence by our ancient hero.

Unusually, Rumpole is, arguably, bested twice in this collection. He often loses case, of course, due to misfortune or mistake but usually at least has the moral victory. In "Rumpole and the Showfolk" Rumpole's own client succeeds in deceiving him and in "Rumpole and the Fascist Beast" one of his fellow barristers,Lutaf Ali Khan, sums up Rumpole's style rather too bluntly, with painful accuracy. These episodes only serve to make our narrator seem more flawed and easier to empathise with.

A great collection with no weak stories.
