Product Description

Product Description

The Rough Guide to South America explores the continent in its entirety, from the urban hot spots of Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires to the natural beauty of the Amazon Basin and the Andes Mountains. Covering thirteen countries, the Galapagos Islands and Easter Island, and in-depth information on all the major border crossings, the Rough Guide is the ideal companion for those travelling through several countries on one trip. 24 full-colour pages introduce the continent's highlights, including the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, Rio's beaches and the glaciers of Patagonia. As well as vivid accounts of these and the myriad other attractions, the guide provides invaluable practical information – hundreds of critical reviews on the best places to stay, eat and drink plus expert advice on exploring the jungles, deserts, mountains, and rivers. Finally, there are over 150 maps covering every region and city, all fully referenced to the listings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overall guide for the continent, 21 Nov 2004
By Tim Salter (Bombay, India) - See all my reviews
The Rough Ruide gives decent practical information which is nicely balanced between the two main rivals. Lonely planet dwells far too much on hotel and restaurant reviews which are 80% - 90% wrong by the time you get there - far better to ask the locals. Besides, since every one else has a lonely planet, you can always read one over lunch if you feel the urge. I had the original "South America Handbook" (now re-cast in the footprints series) many years ago and agree that it was facually excellent, but for me it was a little too dry and boring. It lacked the opinions and sense of humour that you find in the Rough Guide.
Of course, everyone has his or her own taste, but for me Gough Guides beat the rest. I lived in South America, (Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia, but travelling all over) for about 3 years from 1998, and found the rough guides for the individual coutries to be excellent; they often pointed out places in a particular town or region that my friends who had grown up in the town, did not know.
I do however agreee that this particular "compilation of guides" is not as strong as the individual country guides. so if you are planning to visit one or two countries only, then you might be better off buying the individual guides rather than this continental one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish!, 16 Feb 2004
By Serena (Bolivia (at the moment!)) - See all my reviews
Don't even bother with this book. I was so disappointed by it. Basically everything is wrong with it and the book sends you round in circles, very frustrating. Very luckily my travelling partner had the good sense to take the best and original Footprint South American Handbook with him. Even Lonely Planet scrubs up a little better than this Rough Guide. Move over Rough Guide - your time is up!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok but not as detailed as Footprint, 14 Feb 2008
By Elizabeth Bryant "libby" (leic, Uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This guide was ok and I read it before departing to south america, where I went to Peru, Chile and Boliva and it provided some good information but it wasn't as detailed as the footprint guide, which is the one we ended up taking. If you are visiting one main country in South America it's best to get a specific guide for that country. Generally useful to help you decide which countries you want to visit but not very in depth.
