2.0 out of 5 stars good for planning but not an ideal travel companion, 17 April 2004
As the saying goes, not a guide book is perfect.

I bought this rough guide with me during my recent 10-days visit to Czech Republic. I guess the most astounding discovery of using this guide book is the very limited detailed of the local maps provided.

I had got lost trying to locate one of the hostels listed on the guide. While the instuction of getting there is not perfect, there isn't even a map for that area that I'm staying.

The description of the accommodation is quite vague - I guess afterall you have got to experience it yourself instead of taking the words that for e.g. 'undeniably cheap' or the 'bottom-rock price' etc.

Furthermore, the approach in summarizing the places of interest didn't make my life any easier. I found it amazingly difficult trying to figure out what is the name of one particular monument or historial building using this book. It's sorta a whole pot of places at one place where your task is to pick up one by one from the pot and playing a guessing game. But the good news is most of the local tourist centres do provide a far more detailed and user-friendly guide (most of them for free).

I believe this particular guide is fairly good to plan your trip and knowing the places where you otherwise wouldn't have gone. But not a good company while you're travelling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good guide, 14 Feb 2004

Despite how stupidly the book review begins, the guide is good. It offers all the information clearly and well organized.
