I love Rough Guides and I like the idea of an overall guide to South East Asia. Unfortunately the area covered is so vast that no one guide book will ever do it justice. This would be the perfect book to read before travelling to get a basic idea of the various countries and info on customs, border crossings (which it covers well) and the maps are really great. It seems to have crammed in lots of info, but because there is so much, it's not an easy read and not really useful.

Because of the size, this book is too heavy to carry with you, and too barren in sites to see or ranges of accommodation. In most countries guide books can be found in English, and then exchanged with other travellers (if you don't wish to lug them around).

Buy this book as a taster to all countries and to use the maps for route planning , then go buy the Rough Guide that relates to the particular country you will be travelling in or buy when you arrive.

Overall a useful guide book which looks nice(!!), but it's one you could do without. (Sorry Rough Guides!)
