1.0 out of 5 stars Badly laid out and misleading - avoid!, 7 Jan 2006
Having just returned from a busy holiday in amazing Hong Kong (Jan 2006) I'd strongly recommend AVOIDING this book. Despite buying the latest edition just before our trip, this book caused hours of wasted time and annoyance due to inaccuracies and totally out-of-date information.

The background on Hong Kong and its culture is OK and would make an interesting read before your trip, but by relying on it whilst planning your itinerary or on the streets of Hong Kong you'll be sorry. For example: every restaurant we tried to find (we tried several from the book) didn't exist except just one!

The layout is unhelpful. Restaurants, bars and sights aren't categorised by location, so you can't find somewhere near to where you happen to be easily. The maps are also vague and unhelpful. Moreover the directions to the attractions are either non-existent or poor and key facts are missing about subjects such as HK hotel service charges.

If only we'd bought the Lonely Planet guide instead...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Guide, but slightly out of date, 20 Mar 2002
I found this guide extremely useful for my short visit to Hong Kong and Macau on March 2002. However, I have to rate it with only 4 stars as the information was slightly outdated. This is of course a consequence of the two cities changing so rapidly in the last three years since this edition was first put on sale.
This is my first experience with a "Rough Guide" (I usually used the Michelin Green Guides where available) and I think I will consider these guides again for my next destination. One thing that I missed from the Rough Guide was some fotographs of the main places recommended for a visit. That would have been very useful in deciding what to visit and helpful to find the recommended attractions.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, 31 Jan 2000
Just returned from HK and the fact that my copy is completely battered, torn, with pages missing illustrates how much I used it.

Like all 'Rough Guides..' indispensable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rought Guide to Hong Kong and Macau....don't buy
Found the Rough Guide really difficult to follow and it seemed badly laid out.
Used an AA guide instead, which was fantastic and I would highly recommend that.
