4.0 out of 5 stars At last, a beginner's music book for grown up idiots!, 30 Oct 2001
By A Customer
If, like me, you have only the dimmest memories of learning to read music at school, and you want a really simple book that explains it all, without being aimed at precocious 5 year olds, this ones for you. The chapters (and indeed, the book itself) are short, but everything you need to know is here and in a very comprehensible format. On rare occasions the book lapses into assuming some prior knowledge on the part of the reader, but what of that! I am a total doofus, and yet in two weeks I have learnt how to read complicated pieces of music, slowly, but accurately. Yay!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reference, 14 Jul 2002
Outstanding book on music theory that gives you all the facts you need, plus useful learning aids. Really refreshing approach, ideal for both non-musicians who want to get started or for musicians who want to know more. Small enough to stash in your instrument case (well, unless you play harmonica) and full of *useful* reference material. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone learning an instrument, 22 Mar 2003
By A Customer
This is a brilliant little book. I am learning guitar (have been for about 10 years!) and have never really understood the rudiments of music, especially the terminology and weirdnesses of chord structure. I have other books on music, but when I wanted a simple explanation of what, for example, an 'augmented fifth' is, I was left floundering and confused. And that is why this Rough Guide is so good. It explains things clearly, simply and logically. I have learned so much in just a few days. This book really should be essential required reading for ANYONE who is learning an instrument.
