Book Description
INTRODUCTION
Some children love books, while others want to have as little to do with them as possible. The Rough Guide to Children’s Books 5–11 hopes to stimulate both groups: helping keen readers to discover new titles and authors, and less committed ones to find the book that suddenly makes reading seem exciting and meaningful. The titles chosen are some of the best, brightest and most enthralling currently in print. Such books are not just entertaining; in many cases they also have much to offer by way of general stimulation, as I have tried to indicate when discussing individual titles.
The books recommended have been divided into different subjects and separated according to suggested age ranges. These age ranges can never be exact, given that reading ability differs widely and some children have always enjoyed books aimed at readers older than themselves. And, of course, the same children may also enjoy dipping into books designed for younger readers. As always when reading for pleasure, individuals should feel free to please themselves. However keen an adult may be about any particular title, it is nearly always counterproductive to try to insist that children read it too, whether they want to or not.
But there is a lot to be said for continuing adult participation in stories through reading aloud to children, even when children are themselves competent readers. This usually proves deeply enjoyable for all concerned while allowing children at home valuable time with a parent. It also provides young readers with opportunities for talking about a story before, after and even while it is going on. Books have always offered children a chance to go beyond themselves and their own immediate experience, and it is only natural that they should often want to discuss favourite stories and some of the challenging ideas these might provide.
Titles have not been divided by gender, since the best books for children usually appeal to both sexes. While most authors have been restricted to only one title, there are many suggestions for further reading. Favourite books read in childhood are often remembered with great affection for the rest of an adult’s life. I hope the same turns out to be true for some of the titles recommended here.

Synopsis
This guide examines the best children's books available for five to 11 year olds. It includes reviews of recommended titles, ranging from picture books through classic tales and poetry to stories dealing with contemporary issues, with a brief synopsis of each and an evaluation of its special qualities and educational advantages. The guide is subdivided by age and subject matter.
