I and three friends have been living in Poland for the last four months. Prior to leaving UK, the four of us bought a selection of different phrase books and dictionaries. Without doubt, for being able to find what you wanted to say in realistic everyday situations, the Rought Guide to Polish came out tops every time. The phrasebook section is comprehensive and provides useful phrases for 'realistic' situations, you won't find "My camel has three humps' in this book! The section on grammar provides enough information that you can have a reasonable attempt at constructing sentences yourself without getting bogged down in technical, linguistic jargon. The dictionary section is fairly comprehensive, although not exhaustive, and you will find most of the words you are likely to need there. For the price, this book is a real bargain and certainly better than many of the more expensive books that are available. In summary, a cheap, easy to use, practical and informative guide. If you only want to buy one phrasebook, this is the one to go for. The only caveat that I would add would be that, if you are staying in Poland for more than just a couple of weeks, you will find a more comprehensive dictionary useful. The one I have is a mini Polish-English/English-Polish dictionary by Langenscheidt. Have a great time in Poland, I am!

I recently spent a week in Kraków and this little book never left my side! It was really very useful, especially when phrases such as "where's the toilet?", "can I have the bill?" and of course "two beers please!" were needed! Although most Poles speak embarassingly good English, they still smile to see you making an effort in their language! It sets you apart from the typical and embarassing "Brit Abroad."

As well as the menu reader at the back it has some useful pages towards the front with things like greetings, formalities, numbers and telling the time which are all helpful to anyone who is maybe hoping to spend a bit longer over there, or learn the language!

This book won't allow you to have fluent conversations in Polish - the problem with knowing phrases is that often you can't understand the replies that you get, as they may assume you can speak Polish! But like I said earlier on, they usually speak English and like to practice on you!

All in all, this book's really great and worth every penny!

It fits in your back pocket. It has a good range of words with their proper and phonetic translations. Also, scattered throughout the book are useful hints on cultural and other such important nuances - most importantly the common colloquialisms and swear words. Now you'll know just what they are shouting at you.
At the back there is a menu reader.
Its great. Nuff said.
