4.0 out of 5 stars Not exhaustive but a good starting point, 10 Jan 2003
By A Customer
In defence of the Rough Guide I do think it is a good basic guide to the city but I dont think it can be blamed quite so heavily for all its errors. My parents have been living in Berlin for years and every time I visit I find streets look different and new buildings have appeared. During the summer of 2002 work was taking place at Potsdamer Platz and a number of train stations were closed as a result but there were plenty of new U/S bahn maps available in stations which showed which stations were temporarily out of action. The Rough Guide doesnt tell you everything but its a good starting point, particularly if you want a list of hotels or a general guide to what's out there. Berlin has a great tourist information service and city and transport maps are easily obtainable for free from a lot of stations. Just use the Rough Guide as a starting point and bear in mind anyone trying to produce a guide to Berlin will be having a hard time because the city is extremely difficult to keep up with!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors, 12 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Whilst the history and descriptions in this book are quite good it is let down by the accuracy of the maps. Many of the maps are simply different scales of the same area and there is not enough coverage of Berlin's outer areas. Additionally the maps that noted the train stations did not note the places of interest and vice versa. As such I found myself constantly flicking between maps to get bearings. However the most disappointing aspect was that the underground train map was out of date which led me onto the wrong train on more than one occasion. Of additional frustration was that more often than not the opening times for places were wrong.

If you are looking for one book that comprehensively covers all of Berlin I would look else where.
