4.0 out of 5 stars Worth recommending, 14 Aug 2004
You can't expect everything from a phrase book, but this one is quite good. It caters for the needs of the visitor who just wants to get by. It has a good selection of words and phrases. You usually find what you need or an alternative that will do. I particularly like the English sound-alike transcription of the Portuguese words and phrases. It helps with the pronunciation. It has helped me.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Complete Phrasebook, 19 Aug 2005
I brought the book on the previous single review; I went to Portugal without knowing any words or reading the book beforehand and found this book fantastic. It has the Basic structure of the language, the basic everyday phases (brilliant), useful information like numbers, dates, days etc, it has two large English to Portuguese and Portuguese to English sections, these contain useful information i.e., phases to buy stamps etc and the book also has a page of swear words. Also the book is not big so it was easy to carry everywhere we went and easily fits into your pocket. An excellent book, the only one I took to Portugal.

1.0 out of 5 stars not very useable as a phrasebook, 30 April 2007
We did not find this phrasebook/dictionary very useful on our recent trip to Portugal.

The actual 'phrasebook' section was very short (more of a short but incomplete guide to grammar etc). Useful phrases were actually spread throughout the dictionary section. So for example if you looked up the Portuguese word for 'Road' you might find some useful info and phrases to do with motoring. This made it very difficult to find anything - for example, I wanted to know how to ask 'can I try it on' in a clothes shop, but how to find the phrase? Should I look under 'try', or 'clothes', or where?

Portuguese pronounciation is quite difficult, but the book did not have a proper guide i.e. when is a 'c' hard or soft, do I pronounce the e at the end of a word? There was a phonetic guide to pronouncing words in the dictionary and phrases, but no general pronounciation guide to help with new words you might see written.

The grammar section in the phrasebook would have been interesting if you were planning on learning the language properly (for example, endings for regular verbs etc) but not much use for a short holiday.

And finally the menu reader seemed quite incomplete - most of the restaurants we went in offered a type of meat called 'novilho', which was nowhere to be seen.

So, I wouldn't buy a phrasebook in this format again!
