2.0 out of 5 stars Very Rough Guide!!, 14 Jul 2001
By Jeannie (Notts United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Before I went to Egypt I bought this book and the Lonely Planet one and I have to say that this one is still in pristine condition while the Lonely Planet guide is battered from use.

The maps in this book are inaccurate and the one of Luxor is totally wrong! I found it hard to find anything quickly due to the layout of the text and the prices quoted are often misleading anyway.

The detailed religious history covering all the Egyptian deities and their function in the ancient society is good though but you could buy a book specifically for this information for far less money.

Overall, if you need a guide book, in this case I would advise you to get the Lonely Planet one as it is much more accurate, consise (with regard to both information and book size) and basically far more helpful for an independant traveller!

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible guide to Egypt, 23 Oct 2000
By A Customer
The new updated Rough Guide to Egypt is a "must have" for a visit to this fabulous country. Well written in an entertaining manner, it not only lists all the details you need to know about the country, but includes accurate costs as well - in 3 weeks we found only 1 error. We compared this guide to others our fellow travellers had with them, and the Rough Guide was clearly head and shoulders above the rest. If you are planning to go to Egypt, don't go without this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars A very inferior guide book, 3 Mar 2000
By A Customer
I went to Egypt with several guides, the Rough Guide among them, and as it happens I noticed that the material in the Rough Guide was effectively 'stolen' from others, in particular from the very much superior Cadogan Guide to Egypt. Where the Rough Guide manages to be original, it is flat-footed, ill-informed and often out of date. I would not recommend it.
