WHEN TO GO Deciding when to go isn’t easy since, except for Denmark, Scandinavia experiences intense seasonal changes. The short summers (roughly mid-June to mid-August) can be as hot as in any southern European resort, with high temperatures regularly recorded in Denmark, southern Norway and Sweden, and the Baltic islands. Even the northern areas of each country are temperate, and the whole of the Norwegian west coast, for example, is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Rain, though, is regular, and in the far north of Norway especially – and to a lesser extent in Sweden and Finland – summer temperatures can plunge extremely low at night, so campers need decent equipment for extended spells of sleeping out. One bonus this far north, though not exactly a boon to sleep, is the almost constant daylight provided by the Midnight Sun. The summer is celebrated everywhere with a host of outdoor events and festivities, and is the time when all the facilities for travellers (tourist offices, hotel and transport discounts, summer timetables) are functioning. However, it’s also the most crowded time to visit, as the Scandinavians are all on holiday too: go either side of summer (late May/early June or September), when the weather is still reasonable, and you’ll benefit from more peace and space. Autumn, especially, is a beautiful time to travel, with the trees and hillsides turning golden brown in a matter of days. In winter, from November to around late May, only Denmark retains a semblance of Western European weather, while the other countries suffer long, dark and extremely cold days. The cold may be severe, but it’s crisp and sharp, never damp, and if you’re well wrapped up the cities at least needn’t be off-limits – though, unless you’re exceptionally hardy, the far north is best left to its own, gloomy devices. You’ll find broad climatic details in the introductions to each country; for mean temperatures all year round, check the temperature chart below.

WHAT TO TAKE It’s as well to give some thought as to what to take – and worth packing that bit more to stave off hardship later. Expect occasional rain throughout the summer and take a waterproof jacket and a spare sweater. A small, foldaway umbrella is useful too. If camping, a warm sleeping bag and good walking shoes are vital (and useful, too, in sprawling cities and the flat southern lands). Mosquitoes are a pest in summer, especially further north and in lake regions, and some form of protective cream is essential. For winter travel, take as many layers as you can pack. Gloves, a hat or scarf that covers your face, thick socks and thermal underwear are all obligatory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scan-tastic!, 16 Sep 2000
By A Customer
I have travelled a lot, and read a lot of guidebooks, but this one achieved the perfect balance of information, tips, culture stuff and practical ideas. Also, as it is written about quite a large area of land, it is amazing that the authors managed to get enough information on each country as they did! My faveourite part was the section on Copenhagen, which I thought gave a perfect insight into the city. The guide was also very good on Uppland in Sweden, where I had visited before, but this time, I saw and did a lot more with the help of this book. I like the way that Scandinavia:a rough guide gives the reader cultural information, such as etiquette (remember to take your shows off in Sweden!) and history. This adds an extra level of insight to your visit. My friend called the book 'Scan-tastic', which sums it up perfectly!

5.0 out of 5 stars As Good As Ever, 22 Mar 2005
By A Customer
For a book covering four countries, this is excellent value. I have used the older edition of this book for several budget weekends in the featured cities and I can honestly say it has been the only book I have taken with me!
It's in the usual style of the series, of course, which should appeal not just to budget travellers. There's just the right level of history and political background material as well.
In the same region, their new guide to the Baltic States looks interesting - I'm just waiting for some readers' reviews!

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read!, 8 Jun 2003
By A Customer
I've read about 10 travel books in my time, it may not seem much but it's enough to get the idea of what you can excpect out of a 'travel book series'. By far this is the best account of a country in a travel book I have read - and not only that you get 4 countries for the price of one (£15.99 in your local bookshop opposed to £15.99 each!). Not only is this guide good for travelling but it's good for if you want to just read up about a country that interests you. I bought this book soely for the Norway section but found the other (3) sections very interesting too, this really is a full acount of Scandinavia. Be warned though if you are excpecting to see Iceland (and Greenland) in this guide - well you wont, for some reason Iceland (and Greenland) seem to have been left out of the defenition of Scandinavia by 'Rough Guides'. However don't let that put you off, this truly is a good value, very interesting and all round good book!
