No other guide to Ireland offers the detail and the insight offered by the Rough Guide. It offers the reader an excellent source of information when planning visits or itineraries, together with an historical and cultural context which is second to none. For anyone planning a visit to Ireland, north or south, this book offers an excellent introduction and a valuable travelling companion. Honest, thorough and enjoyable reading.

The problem with this book is the apparent lack of balance throughout. There are major sections on unimportant attractions and towns, while larger or, in my view, better deserving cases have scant or no information. Just looking at the attractions I know well, particularly in the North, the book is littered with inaccuracies, sometimes serious.

At times the book strays into Ireland's troubled political life. This is no bad thing, indeed in a book of this sort it is a necessary feature to put travellors minds at ease. However, it is a shame that the majority of references and features are (sometimes grossly) biased or just plain wrong.

This book will be adeqaute for a visit to beautiful Ireland, but take a look at the Lonely Planet guide first - in my opinion a much more relevant, accurate and helpful effort.
