A warm, human story of a new life in France.A warm, human story of a new life in France.
This is the warm and very human story of how a former soldier and his pianist wife gave up everything in England to start a new life in a beautiful manor house near Toulouse in Southern France - the land of vineyards and sunshine. The author tells the story of how they set out to find their new home and turned it into a small but exclusive holiday business with all its worries, dramas and hilarious anecdotes.
Paddy has been urged and inspired to write of their adventures by countless numbers of their guests from around the world who have been captivated by the story, and by their many French friends. "To France - With Love!" gives a strong flavour of Southern France, as well as many new, often comic, insights into the age-old Franco-British relationship. It is a lively story spiced with moments of hard graft, hilarity, despair, luck and - ultimately -success.
Paddy King-Fretts was born in Dorking, 1941. After the war his family settled first in Dorset then in North Devon where they farmed on Exmoor. After education at Sherborne, he entered R.M.A. Sandhurst before being commissioned into The Devonshire and Dorset Regt. During his career he served two operational tours with 22 S.A.S. Regiment before taking command of his own regiment in 1982. After meeting Rachel, he left the Army in 1992 and they moved to France where the story is set. A keen sportsman, Paddy captained the R.M.A.S. Modern Pentathlon team and was shortlisted for the '64 Olympics.
