Product Description

Product Description

Hud Bannon was as tough as the Texas land he lived on. Women were drawn to him like pins to a magnet. The boy Lonnie made an idol of him. But was he a rapist? Only two people never bowed to the force of his personality; his father Homer and the woman Halmea. Now, Hud is determined to conquer them too, at any cost.

About the Author

McMurtry has published 21 novels (the best-known listed above). He also operates antiquarian bookshops in Washington DC, Texas and Arizona.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is incredibly touching and poignant., 27 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Horseman, Pass by (Paperback)
Horseman, Pass By is quite a departure for McMurty, being very different from his "Lonesome Dove" works. It has more in common with "The Last Picture Show" than it does any of his other works. It was the basis for the Paul Newman movie, "Hud", but that movie failed miserably in capturing the essense of this novel. (The best part about the movie is the performance of Brandon de Wilde as Lonny). I've re-read this several times, and it always touches me with each reading. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad guy? Good guy? You decide, 1 May 2001
By A Customer
Nowadays it is perhaps impossible to successfully write a compelling story when Nazis figure in. The perennial 'bad guys' are once again used to unavoidable ends. Bernard Vipont, a lawyer by day and hunter of Nazi collaborators by night, falls into the well-worn genre of the hero who wears black. Although as a vigilante he occupies an interesting space of moral ambiguity, set against the Nazis, he predictably emerges on the lighter side of moral dualism. Crakanthorpe applies an element of sexual self-loathing to Vipont's psyche which is not undesirable, but it fails to carry him beyond the dualism.
