Product Description

The Hope is five miles long, one mile high. A ship launched on a voyage to a new utopia - a philanthropist's dream. But there has been no landfall and the ship's purpose has been forgotten, and between decks life is decaying into a phantasmogoric nightmare as the passengers descend into madness or simply revert to instinct. THE HOPE was reviewed ecstatically everywhere, from the TLS, Spectator and Interzone, and is shown to be even more relevant now than it was in 1990.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Dark theme throughout the book., 28 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This book has remained one of my all time favourites! It's very dark and gothic. If you like something a bit different...frightening, yet thought provoking...then this is the one for you. It grabs hold of your heart and twists it a little more with every page!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and darkly terrifying, 16 Nov 2005
By Katy May (West Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I can't say I enjoyed these stories as they led me into various emotions and also into waking intermittently, scared of creatures I had only read about. It's been about 25 years since a story made that happen! The book is beautifully and powerfully written, well worth a read if you are not the timid type!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good and evil, 1 Jun 2005
By A. Wasenczuk "speedbird2" (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is essentially a collection of linked short stroies, through which Lovegrove manages to sustain the intense 'hit' of the true short story for an entire novel. It's a story of a world gone wrong, a microcosm; in particular, a world in isolation from the Universe, gradually running down under the strange weight of entropy. Is it allegorical, or just scary? Who knows. Darkly compelling, certainly.
