Product Description

Product Description

In 1970, Deep Purple burst on to the British rock scene with their hit "Black Night" and bestselling album "Deep Purple in Rock". This is the autobiography of their lead singer, Ian Gillan. Here he tells his life story, and that of the band he helped to make great. Stories of friction and violence, groupies and non-stop partying, drugs and alcohol, and how, finally, it all spiralled out of control to destroy the band. This book traces Gillan's career from his childhood in Hounslow and early days with bands such as Episode Six and The Javelins. It concentrates on the international fame he found with songs including "Smoke on the Water" and "Child in Time". His outrageous life continues with Black Sabbath and the Gillan band, with whom he toured worldwide, whilst also writing consistently bestselling albums and singles.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting book!, 5 May 2001
By A Customer
This is the interesting and very informative autobiography by one of the greatest Rock singers of all time: Ian Gillan! It begins by describing Gillan's childhood and teenage years, moving on through to the 1960s, when he first started singing in various bands.

The emphasis, of course, is on Gillan's involvement with Deep Purple, his relationship with the other members of the band, and interesting 'behind-the-scenes' stories of how this great band made their hit albums and went on tour. For the decicated fan, there are other fascinating tidbits of information: I especially was interested to read about Ian Gillan's views on JC Superstar.

The book has also got an eight-page picture section, including both black-and-white and colour photos.

Overall: a must-read for any Deep Purple and Hard Rock Music fan!

4.0 out of 5 stars The man who's done it all, 3 May 2004

One of the most candid autobiographies I've ever read. This is easy and quite enjoyable reading, with more than one moment I caught myself laughing out loud.
Ian Gillan tells it like it is (the whole truth, but I suspect not all of it, but definitely the good bits) with quite a sense of humour. He makes it crystal clear that Ritchie Blackmore was not the only "difficult one" in the band, and he writes unashamedly about his failed relationships, failed business ventures and failed bands. I respect him for that.

His positive outlook on life wins the day, even though he never markets himself as a survivor. One gets the impression that Ian Gillan is a fun guy to know, and couldn't care less about the millions he's made, and lost over the years.

The books starts where the hero is a toddler, and ends at the start of the "Hell or High Water" Tour, which is a shame, because I would have liked to read about the incident with the glass of water. But a great autobiography, none the less.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gillan is god...well, not quite, 20 April 2002
By A Customer
Well worth reading if you want to know more about the man, who it turns out is no more than any man, albeit with a wonderful voice and personality. He takes you through his life, never forgetting to point out his errors in glorious detail (just refuse if he ever asks you to test one of his inventions...). Could have gone in more detail about his relationships with the other band members, though he does give an insight to the difficulties he and TMIB faced.

This is a chatty, light read from a singer who comes across as articulate, witty and not likely to take himself too seriously. Read more
