Product Description

Product Description

This new, totally revised and updated version of 'The X-Planes' is the result of the author's life-long interest in what many consider to be the world's most exotic aircraft family. Previous editions, the last of which was published in 1988 and covered up to the X-31, are regarded as icons of aviation publishing. Having sold in large numbers they are now actively sought after in the second-hand market. Encompassing everything from the rudimentary yet world-famous Bell X-1 supersonic research aircraft of 1947 to the very latest manifestations of the X-designation, which include JSF and various space test vehicles, the book contains a detailed and authoritative account of every single X-designated aircraft. Many documents were specially declassified for previous editions, and this is also the case with this new version. In fact, there is considerable new, and newly-declassified information on the earlier X-Planes in this volume. Each aircraft is described fully with coverage of history, specifications, propulsion systems and disposition in a logical, readable format. Complementing the text are over 900 photographs, many of which are previously unpublished; indeed many of the images from previous editions of the book have been changed. Included in the photo coverage are rare cockpit illustrations of every manned X-Plane to progress beyond the drawing board stage. Each X-Plane is also illustrated by an accurate and detailed multi-view drawing. These also provide colour scheme information and scale data. Also included are extensive appendices, an index and miscellaneous tables which among other things, present detailed individual flight logs of the majority of manned aircraft described. Likely to be one of the most sought after aviation titles to have been published for many years; Covers all the X-Planes which have been developed from the 1940s to the present day; The last edition has been out of print for nearly a decade yet is still sought by aviation enthusiasts and historians; Extensive review and feature coverage in the aviation press is anticipated

5.0 out of 5 stars Vital for anyone interested in experimental flight, 21 Aug 2001

The first edition of this book was excellent; this is quite simply stunning, with about twice as much material there, and the story of the X planes brought right up to date. Everything and everyone from Yeager to the latest lifting-body reentry vehicles is described here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny, 2 Jul 2002
By Research (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Jay Miller has a formidable reputation for accuracy and in-depth research - not least among aerospace designers and test pilots. That should give you a pretty good idea of the quality that underpins this long-awaited, new edition of the X-Planes, that's even better than the earlier versions.

Somehow, he's managed to raise the bar yet again and produce another indispensable book in his characteristic, no-nonsense style. Its clear layout means it can be used for quick reference: facts, figures, 3-views and photographs - or if you want a more in-depth information and background - that's there too.

As a resource that charts the history of these remarkable aircraft - and in doing so, provides valuable clues to the future of aviation - this book is worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 31 Aug 2002

A superb book. Not the kind of thing you're going to read from cover to cover, but great fun to browse through, or just flick through looking at all the pictures.

If you're interested in detail about a particular X-plane, then this will almost certainly have it. It's easily the most comprehensive on my bookshelf.
