Product Description

Synopsis

The year is 1989. The cold War is over. The Iron Curtain lies in tatters and communism is taking its final bow across the globe. In the heart of London in a small cafe, Hungarian exile Tristan Szerei contemplates his future. Can he finally put his past behind him and return to Budapest or must he remain a prisoner to history? Enter Jonathan Blul, an American eye-doctor who is lovelorn, disheveled, opinionated and manipulative. This chance meeting begins a life-changing journey for both men - each leading to quite different consequences. The third component in the unholy trinity is Kay-Kay, a beautiful but enigmatic Cantonese club owner who is unable to trust or love. She is also exiled, this time in California from a dark and oppressive family history. Anthony Steyning joins these characters by circumstance as he combines an erudite grasp of the historical and political context of the times with a taut and gripping tale of love, loss and personal tragedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must read, 8 Aug 2006
By David Walls - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"An absolute must read for people who enjoy the pace and crispness of an international fast-paced thriller, with dialogue charged with humour, wit, and sarcasm.

Steyning's wit is never pretentious, and his appeal lies in being 'human, all too human'. The character's profiles are extremely accurate and truly reflect the times in which the story was set. In fact, there still are people like Tristan walking around in today's Hungary.

The novel is deliberately kept short... As Oscar Wilde wrote "Anybody can write a three-volume novel. It merely requires a complete ignorance of both life and literature."

A remarkable piece of work. Enjoy."

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good read from Steyning, 1 May 2006
Steyning's latest novel is a thoroughly enjoyable read, and is highly entertaining. The pace of the text is energetic, and carries the reader from the first word to the last. The main characters are well rounded; development of the love triangle is very plausable and draws empathy from the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roman Payne writes from Paris, 26 Oct 2006
By E. Bascunan Davila - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Steyning cuts softly, though decisively, through the rinds of societies. Societies, those wonderful arrangements we've set up to distance ourselves from strangers. A powerful writer, his guide is our modern alphabet, which he's tamed beautifully.
