Product Description

Synopsis

When inveterate traveller and international businessman Albert stumbles across a Javanese goddess, Devi, in the tearooms of the American hotel in Amsterdam, the seeds are sown for a deadly pact. Facing the consequences of his impending mortality, Albert decides to sidestep fate and commissions his own murder. Having tragically lost her son, and recently nursed her elderly mother, the beautiful Devi empathises with Albert's plight, and in the wake of his steadfast resolve becomes the "Applicant" to an execution. As the consequences of Albert's macabre plan begin to pile up, his younger friend Casey is drawn into the fray, falling for the exotic charms of the would-be assassin and finding himself caught in the middle of a deadly experiment. Posing profound philosophical questions of existence and destiny, The Applicant hurtles towards its tragic denouement with skill and insight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally something you havent read before!, 23 Nov 2004
They say there are only five stories in the whole world, all of them first written by the old Greek authors and then rewritten over and over again for thousands of years.
STEYNING has come as close as it gets of creating a totally new story not based on neither Sophocles nor Homeros.
With a fresh and creative change of language, ranging from romantic descriptions of the old city of Amsterdam to a very modern dialog, Steyning leads the reader through hate, love and death.
The novel describes the modern taboos regarding our own death in a most surprising way, challenging our beliefs of how things should be...

5.0 out of 5 stars Plot With A Twist!, 28 Oct 2004
By A Customer
'The Applicant'is an engaging and entertaining read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has been a very long time since I read anything so clever and witty, and it gave me an intellectual pleasure similar to that which comes from reading a Milan Kundera. I look forward to reading more from Anthony Steyning.

5.0 out of 5 stars To be or ...., 16 Jan 2005
Anthony Steyning has penned a brilliant idea in a mysterious/humorous/pensive style that jumps off the page. He introduces us to unforgetable characters, beautifully written, draws us to where they have landed and takes us along for a cascading ride. Terrific book, absorbing read and would make a great movie as well.
