4.0 out of 5 stars A hidden treasure of war history, told by a seaman survivor, 11 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This is a thrilling small story. The introduction giving an insight into life in the Navy and its terminology before the war. The author, serving on one of his majestys firgates is given yet another convoy duty to esocrt vessels accross the North Atlantic. Little known to the ships crew, America were just about to transport thousands of troops over to help fight Europe's War effort, on all the great passenger liners of the time. The author unwittingly became part of a subterfuge to decoy the German U boats to the North Atlantic while the troops made safe convoy through the south Atlantic. The story is supported by lots of investigative work, giving details of signals passing between UK and USA Naval commands and between Germany and its Naval forces in the Atlantic. The book has particular attraction to Naval historians, ex sea farers of her Majesty's Navy and those with a general interest in maritime war stories. Well worth the reading.
