Of Mice and Men is a classic, 28 Aug 2000

But don't let that put you off. The book is not, as a previous reviewer asserts, 'vulgar and violent' but a touching study of the relationship between two men struggling to survive and keep their dreams alive against the odds. I am teaching this book to my GCSE class, so if they start shooting dogs, women, each other etc, etc, I know where I'm going wrong......

Excellent, with issues that affect all in today's society., 4 Jun 2001

This key book by stienbeck shows our society in many different shades. it is a lesson of love, loneliness, isolation, rascism and togetherness. the fact that the book was made into a film also shows it's popularity. easy to pick up, hard to put down and extremely good!

Why do you hate 'Of Mice and Men' so much?, 19 Nov 2000

I'm reading 'Of Mice and Men' as part of my GCSE course this year and, as school reading goes, its really good. I've had to struggle though some really boring stuff like 'War of the Worlds' and when my teacher said we had to read another book i was really annoyed. But, when we started to read it, I realised just how good it actually was!! It explores the theme of loneliness between two ranch hands in mid - west America. George takes care of Lennie, who is a retard, and they go through life and work, solving a lot of problems. It tells of the two mens bond with each other, as George must commit a crime of passion and kill Lennie to save him from the horrible death that Curly was offering. When doing this, George must also face his fears of becomming lonely himself - becomming another typical, anonimous ranch hand whose name no one knows. This book is not violent and if you think it is then you must have taken it in completely the wrong context or just have no comprehension skills at all. I really enjoyed reading 'Of Mice and Men' and couldn't put it down once I started to read it. Fair enough, it contains some scenes that shock but they help to build up the plot of the book and show how much the two men will give up in order for the other to be happy.
