Product Description

Product Description

Louise Gluck has long practised poetry as a species of clairvoyance. She began as Cassandra, at a distance, in league with the immortals. To read her books sequentially is to chart the oracle's metamorphoses into unwilling vessel, reckless, mortal, down-to-earth. "The Seven Ages" is Gluck's ninth book, one of her strangest and certainly her most bold. In it - like William Blake's mystical Thel - she gazes down at her own death and in so doing forces endless superimpositions of the possible on the impossible. Her act at once defies and embraces the inevitable and is finally mimetic. Over and over, at each wild leap and transformation, flames shoot up the reader's spine. In an essay she writes, "one of the revelations of art is the discovery of a tone or perspective at once wholly unexpected and wholly true to a set of materials". This truth to materials -language, occasion, antecedent - is the proof of a poem.

5.0 out of 5 stars contemporary poetry, 6 Jul 2003
By Alan Rosenfelder (edgware, middlesex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Louise Gluck is a modern American poet who has won many awards for her poetry. This 2001 collection is of the high standard one has come to expect from her.As someone from a non arts background i can only express a very amateur appreciation. My impression is that this collection of poems entitled "The seven ages" is basing it's title on the Shakespearian expression of the stages of a person's life. This book evolves as an oasis of thoughtfulness.I enjoyed such phrases as ;"Time had been good to them, and now they can discuss it together from within,so to speak, which, before, they could not." I thoroughly recommend this book which even on rereading will give further delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars a collection of poetry of the personal with universal appeal, 22 Jul 2001
By Alan Rosenfelder (edgware, middlesex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Seven Ages (Hardcover)
Louise Gluck's latest collection of poems reveal a new cadence to her voice .There is a directness of speech and lack of opacity which is new to her work. The poems as previously in her work inhabit the world of the reflective thoughtful person sighing in the noisy world.Memories and feelings for the past, present and future beg to have sense made of them.I was struck by the description of long hot seemingly endless days spent in her child hood on Long Island where time almost began to cease to exist. This is an excellent book don't miss it.
