Product Description
Synopsis
Frequently portrayed as an era of brutality and chaos, this book reveals the reality behind the legendary warriors of the Dark Ages. It also uncovers the considerable art of warfare in this period, the high level of craftsmanship achieved in the manufacture of all forms of embellished helmets and swords. The book shows how the achievements of the Roman war machine survived throughout the Dark Ages until the time of the Normans. Dan Shadrake is the illustrator of "King Arthur - The True Story" by Graham Philips and Martin Keatman, and works on Robin Hood and the Holy Grail by the same authors. Susanna Shadrake is the author of the script for the video "Arthur Myth & Reality".

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent discussion of the equipage of the groups, 27 Nov 1997
By A Customer
I found this book to be excellent. It included the late Roman Empire equipage that I had missed from the series' other book on the Romans, as well as the Scotti and Pict raiders, the Saxon invaders, the Vikings, and the Normans. The focus of the book is on how a re-enactor might recreate the arms, armors, and clothing of these groups and I, as one who likes to draw ancient soldiers, found it to be most useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relevance to UK Reenactment, 22 Dec 1999
By A Customer
The book is indeed excellent. It uses the photos to full effect and really shows off the best societies from the periods covered. It does not pretend to be an authoratitive work on the 5th Century, more ideas, discussions and historical reproductions which is somewhat refreshing. As an avaid student of history I learnt a lot, as a UK re-enactor it really impressed me and gave me something to strive for. The listing of suppliers at the rear of the book was especially useful. Overall, well worth the money...
