5.0 out of 5 stars Culture shock Hungary, 23 Oct 2003
By Mrs S Rich (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Did you know that Hungarians refer to Hungary as the "belly button of Europe?"Or that there are fifteen different ways of saying Mummy in Hungarian? Or that it was a Hungarian who invented the biro, and another who discovered the importance of vitamins?

These are just some of the facts that you can find in Zsuzanna Ardo's guide to Hungarians and Hungarian culture.

The book begins with a brief introduction to Hungarian history, and to some famous Hungarians. She then covers topics such as food and wine, language and communication, and doing business in Hungary. There are all sorts of snippets on subjects as diverse as watermelons, street signs, ticket fines, and Hungarian funerals.

What she does particularly well is to get across the Hungarian mentality. She explains how Hungary's position in Europe, surrounded by other countries, and with constantly changing borders and nationalities has created the Hungarian psyche. The book then goes on to give hilarious examples of the Hungarian in action, whether in love, trying to get a phone installed, or going to an all night chemist.

I warmly recommend this book which is both witty and informative

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Preparation, 26 Nov 2002
By Dr. T. Sinclair (Kenilworth, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am visiting Budapest in June 2003 so was very interested to come across this volume recently. It's focus is on useful information, broadly conceived, for the business person. Most travel guides are dull affairs that avoid culture, politics and the awkward features of national history. Not so with this book. The author provides a fascinating account of Hungary today and I am looking forward to comparing her interpretation with what I see in a few months time. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Culture Shock! Hungary (A Guide to Customs and Etiquette), 23 Nov 2002
"Culture Shock! Hungary" is one of the golden children of the Culture Shock! family of books. Ardo's text is extremely readable and functional. Part history and language lesson, part culinary and travel guide, and more, "Culture Shock! Hungary" is chock full of interesting trivia and applicable knowledge. Ardo's work is highly recommended to anyone romantically dreaming or seriously planning on visiting Hungary. The book is compact and would also be well worth rereading on one's trip to Budapest, Balaton or the Hortobagy. This mini-masterpiece of hints and humor would also be useful for someone interested in better understanding the burning minds, yo-yo moods and often mysterious ways of Hungarian friends, colleagues or even love interests. And of course, this text is a good read for anyone, in the U.K., Canada or U.S. with Magyar ancestry who is trying to learn more, or read commentary on Hungarian heritage.
"Culture Shock! Hungary" is a thoroughly relevant and entertaining read!
