an essential guide to coping with the culture shock of paris, 15 Jul 2001
By A Customer
As a student moving to Paris I was keen to search for a guide on the best way to cope with the impending change of lifestyle. This is book answered all my questions and those I hadn't even thought of yet. It contains handy summaries of each arrondissement, where best to live and how to cope with the legendary, but apparently misunderstood, rudeness of the Parisians. The tone of the author is enthusiastic and uplifting, and in no way patronising. What I found most refreshing about this guide to Paris was that as well as discussing the many merits of this city, she also includes the downsides, what to look out for and how to cope with them. Every topic I could possibly think of worrying about is covered here, with a realistic approach to finding a job, and how to keep fit, making friends at the same time. There are contact lists for each topic and rundowns of all the embassies and consulates. She lists the sites and sounds of the inner city but also includes the gems hidden away in the suburbs. This is truly an esssential book to have as a quick reference guide, and a realistic but calming view of a whole different world. I wholly reccommend this for anyone thinking of moving to Paris, whether as a student or with a family in tow. All that is left to say is Bonne Chance!
