Interesting - but not quite what I expected., 21 Mar 2004

Having read the equivalent guide to Britain, I was expecting something fairly similar, i.e. a guide on customary local behaviour for potential residents from overseas, however this didn't prove to be the case. This book seems more geared towards short-term visitors, tourists and those on a business trip than anyone planning to live in the country for an extended period of time.Having said that, I did find it an interesting read, although it included a lot of information I wouldn't have expected it to cover, such as a pronounciation guide...this seemed a little unnecessary, as you can always find one of these in a tour guide or phrasebook (which this is not). On the other hand, stuff like how to find a suitable school for your kids, how to open a bank account, etc. which I expected to be included, weren't covered. The author has included a number of personal experiences which were entertaining to read, although his experience of the country has been different from mine in many ways. Saying this, he does manage to convey through way of example an authentic ambiance of certain situations at a particular level of society. It also includes a list of useful addresses for business contacts and language schools, with an absolute gem of a comment, "if mailing to Mexico from abroad, add the word Mexico". Erm...thanks for that one! Would I recommend it? Yes, I don't see why not. It's something different from your usual travel guide. If you're on a short trip, it's fine. However if you were actually going to live in Mexico for a long while, you might want to supplement your reading or even better, ask some of those friendly locals.
