2.0 out of 5 stars Useful, but there's more to know (and other books can help), 13 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This book contains helpful information for the first-time businessperson/vistor to Hong Kong, on how to behave around your Chinese hosts/clients, but suffers from the author's reticence to refer to the more difficult aspects of Hong Kong culture, that the visitor will certainly encounter and will benefit from having explained to him/her. The author shares the average Hong Kong resident's dislike of describing the unpleasant "underbelly" of Hong Kong - the rude, pushy behaviour, the enormous, unpleasant crowds that fill the streets, and other unfortunate situations caused by the tragic, massive influx of refugees from China into the formerely British colony over the past several decades - aspects that are dealt with by other authors. When I lived in Hong Kong in the 90's, expats suplimented Wei's book with Bo Yang's The Ugly Chinaman and the Crisis in Chinese Culture, which dealt with all the aspects of the place (both Hong Kong and China, actually) that authors like Wei consider too much a loss of "face" to discuss. Jan Morris's Hong Kong deals with the sad history of refugee arrivals in Hong Kong and the impact that has had on Hong Kong's culture - a subject, again, too painful (understandably), for many Chinese to discuss, but knowledge of which is essential for any western understanding of the place. Two novels, Timothy Mo's the Monkey King, and Paul Theroux's Kowloon Tong, capture amazingly well many aspects and attitudes of Hong Kong that I encountered in the 90's but which are left out of Wei's account. Also recomended is the Hong Kong classic, Myself a Mandarin, by Austin Coates.

5.0 out of 5 stars great introduction to Hong Kong, 22 April 2002
This is the perfect first book for getting to know Hong Kong. The author managed to present a clear and concise introduction to a multi-cultural society where it is ever so easy to put one's foot in one's mouth. I highly recommend this to anyone moving to Hong Kong.
